Kansas City Royals hammer Toronto Blue Jays 11-3 at Rogers Centre – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals hammered Toronto Blue Jays 11-3 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Monday, July 2 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Blue Jays had taken an early 1-0 lead, thanks to an RBI single from Yunel Escobar. Salvador Perez responded immediately for the Royals as he homered to left in the second to make the score 2-1 in Royals’ favour.
Yuniesky Betancourt and Moustakas continued the assault to extend Royals’ lead to 4-1 in the third. Alex Gordon and Jason Bourgeois also made valuable contributions as Kansas City took an impassable lead.
Blue Jays’ starting pitcher Ricky Romero had a forgettable time on the mound as he gave up eight runs and 11 hits in just over six innings, losing a home start for the first time in almost a year. His counterpart from the Royals, Everett Teaford pitched
with great control and accuracy for his first win of the season. He gave up only three runs and five hits in seven effective innings.
"Teaford did a great job of getting out of that first inning only giving up one," Yost said. "That could have been some damage right there."
"He hit it so hard it didn't think it had enough height to get out but it got out and that was huge," Yost said. "It did turn the momentum around."
"For the most part I thought he pitched very, very well," Yost said in a post game interview. "I'm very pleased with him."
"When you get 11 runs, it's easy to pitch," Teaford said.
Credit must be given to the Royals’ offence that made the most of available opportunities on Monday afternoon. Kansas City had lost three out of four against the Minnesota Twins and they were eager to put things back on the right track.
Learning their lessons, the hitters converted every possible scoring opportunity to put up a huge total on the board. Mike Moustakas led the attack, hitting a towering grand slam in the seventh inning to dent Blue Jays’ confidence levels.
