Kansas City Royals humiliate Oakland Athletics 5-0 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals humiliated the Oakland Athletics with a 5-0 shut-out win at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Tuesday, August 14 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Eric Hosmer provided the Royals with a decent start as he singled to right in the fifth inning to break the deadlock. Chris Getz also made the most of available opportunities with a sacrifice fly hit to right that allowed Jeff Francoeur to score.
Alex Gordon continued to put pressure on Athletics’ starting pitcher Jarrod Parker with an RBI single to right. Alcides Escobar and Billy Butler drove in two runs to cap a five run fifth inning for the Royals.
Starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie had an excellent time on the mound as he gave up just three hits in seven scoreless innings to play a key role in deciding the outcome of the game.
Relief pitchers Tim Collins and Greg Holland combined to pitch two scoreless innings as Kansas City held on to their five run lead to complete an emphatic win. Manager Ned Yost will be expecting his team to play similar brand of baseball in Game 2 as well.
"When I pitched against them earlier in the year every pitch I threw was the exact wrong pitch at the wrong time," Guthrie said. "So I had a nice blueprint on what not to do. I don't think I threw too many duplicate pitches of what they punished me.”
"He's a guy we handled pretty well in Colorado." Bob Melvin said. "He's coming off his best game this year, and he might have been riding some confidence from that. But I'd like to think we could get some better at-bats against him. We didn't have a lot
of good at-bats tonight.”
The Royals used their home conditions extremely effectively to shutout the red hot Oakland Athletics. The A’s, who have given some incredible results after the All Star Break, were unable to live up to the expectation on Tuesday evening. Kansas City dominated
them in almost all aspects of the game to secure their 50th win of the season.
