Kansas City Royals humiliated by Seattle Mariners 4-9 in series opener – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals were humiliated by the Seattle Mariners 4-9 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Monday, July 16 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Casper Wells, who is having an excellent time on the plate this year, earned five RBI’s on Monday to play a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash.
Mariners’ left fielder hit a tremendous three run home-run in the first inning to put his side on the board.
"Do you tell a pitcher when they're throwing perfect game, 'Hey, you're throwing a perfect game?'" Wells said with a smile. "It's like, 'Hey, thanks.'"
"I loved the way they turned around some fastballs," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "If you want to be a good big league hitter, you have to turn around some fastballs."
Justin Smoak also made the most of available opportunities as he homered to left to extend Mariners’ lead to 5-0. Wells continued to play aggressively whenever he stepped onto the plate and he tripled to deep right-centre in the second inning to give the
Mariners complete control of the game at 7-0.
Sean Perez brought the Royals back to life with a home-run to centre and Billy Butler connected for a two run shot in the third inning to reduce Mariners’ lead to 7-3.
Seattle’s right-fielder Ichiro Suzuki tripled to deep right in the fourth and Dustin Ackley added a solo home-run in the sixth to restore his team’s six run lead.
"When you work four days in a row to make a start and it doesn't work, it's kind of frustrating," Sanchez said in a post game interview. "What can I say? I've got to look forward and see what happens."
Royals’ starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez poor form continued as he took his sixth loss of the season. Allowing seven hits and seven runs in just over one inning, he paid the ultimate price for his errors.
His counterpart Jason Vargas grabbed his ninth decision for pitching six effective innings.
