Kansas City Royals look to add firepower in pitching rotation
Kansas City Royals General Manager Dayton Moore will be active in the remaining days of the off-season period, as a mix of players will be examined to fill the necessary vacant position in the ball throwing rotation. For the potential starting pitchers,
this is an opportunity to avail, given the level of competition arising in the Major League setup. There is a plethora of players and spring training isn’t far away.
Moore has a big list to choose from, and the first option comes in the form of Jake Odorizzi. The 20-year-old prospect is called one of the League’s prime pitchers for the future. Only time will tell whether his selection comes up for debate or not. There
are other young pitchers too who can hold the position in the rotation. John Lamb, Danny Duffy and Aaron Crow are players who can play in the line up.
Kevin Millwood, who is still in the free agency, can come into the club. He’s joined by former club player Bruce Chen, who is also in the decision making phase on where to go this season. One final entrant in the list is Zach Miner. The ‘new Zach’, as many
Royals’ fans call him, could come into the rotation. However, that may not be the case entirely.
"Zach is coming off Tommy John surgery and we don't even expect him to be ready until about June some time," Moore said. "He filled a lot of roles in Detroit - he started, pitched in the middle, did some late. He was pretty effective for a few years and
was really one of their more consistent bullpen arms during their runs in that time frame. (Detroit Tigers manager) Jim Leyland had a lot of confidence in him in a variety of roles."
Vin Mazzaro, who joined the Royals from the Oakland Athletics this year after a trade-deal involving David DeJesus, will join Kansas’ strong rotation of Kyle Davis, Sean O’Sullivan and Luke Hochevar. There is still room for one more pitcher, and Dayton needs
to look into filling the vacant spot immediately.
"You're always looking to get better, so it's not out of the question we might make some kind of move, and pitching is one of those areas where you can never have enough depth. And we don't want to be in a position where we're force-feeding some of those
kids, either."
The Royals will be one of the closely observed teams this season. Their trading of Zack Greinke made the headlines during the trading cycle. Can someone live up to the ace’s reputation? Only time will tell.
