Kansas City Royals lose to Boston Red Sox 3-4 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals were beaten by the Boston Red Sox 3-4 in a tight contest at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Friday, August 24 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
After the Red Sox took an early 2-0 lead, Eric Hosmer belted a solo home-run to left in the third inning to bring the Royals back into the contest. Alex Gordon, Alcides Escobar and Mike Moustakas all put up a great show as Kansas City bounced back to claim
a 3-2 lead but the Red Sox were not prepared to go down without a fight.
Pedro Ciriaco doubled to left in the seventh to make the score 4-3 in his team’s favour. Andrew Bailey pitched the perfect ninth to help Boston secure a memorable win.
"The leadoff walk in the seventh and then two 0-2 hits did us in," Royals’ manager Ned Yost said. "The pitch to Ciriaco was actually not a bad pitch, but it's 0-2, you just threw him a good fastball and you come back with a changeup down and in and he hit
it."
"He's obviously not having his kind of a year but he's still got great stuff," Alex Gordon said of Red Sox starter Jon Lester. "I thought putting up those runs against him was pretty impressive. We just couldn't finish it."
Royals will be very disappointed with the outcome of the game. Offensively speaking, they had a number of scoring opportunities but they were unable to take advantage of them. Right now, the Royals are placed third on the American League Central Division
standings with a poor 55-69 record.
Their chances of reaching the playoffs are also pretty slim. It will be interesting to see Manager Joe Maddon and company can end the season on a positive note to give their fans something to cheer about.
Red Sox, on the other hand, will be extremely happy with the way they handled pressure in a nail biting encounter. With their win, Bobby Valentine and his men also snapped their four game losing streak. Surely, they will be looking to continue the good work
in Game 2 and Game 3 as well.
