Kansas City Royals lose to Detroit Tigers 3-6 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals suffered an embarrassing 3-6 loss against the Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Monday, October 1 in the opening game of their three match series.
Royals’ Manager Ned Yost will be very unhappy with what he saw from his men. Royals wasted a large number of scoring opportunities and eventually paid the price. With home conditions working in their favour, they had an excellent chance to start the series
on a winning note but that did not turn out to be the case.
Credit should be given to the Tigers for executing their game plan to perfection on Monday evening. Jim Leyland and company will be hoping to continue their good work in Game 2 to take an impassable 2-0 series lead.
Royals’ starting pitcher Bruce Chen paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound, giving up ten hits and six runs in just over five innings to take his 14th
loss of the season. Chen was hit for back to back home runs by Jhonny Peralta and Miguel Cabrera which helped Tigers establish complete control over the contest.
"He's unbelievable. He's a once-in-a-lifetime player," Tigers’ general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "I talked to him and he said, 'The Triple Crown is important, but it's not the most important thing. I want to win a championship.'"
"It was a rocky road, it was a tough season, but in this business, you have to be able to take some hits," Leyland said. "This isn't a place for the faint-hearted. h**l, we took a lot of punches, a lot of them justified, some of them maybe not. But hey,
we can take a punch."
Tigers’ starter Rick Porcello grabbed his 10th win of the season after giving up just four hits and one run in five solid innings. Striking-out batters at regular intervals, he created all sorts of problems for the Royals’ batting line-up.
After Tigers took the early lead, Alex Gordon homered to right in the sixth inning to put Royals on the board. Jeff Francoeur drove in vital runs in the sixth and eighth but the Tigers held on for a deserving victory.
