Kansas City Royals lose to Los Angeles Angels 3-4 in thriller – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals were beaten by the Los Angeles Angels 3-4 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Sunday, September 16 in the finale of their three match series.
With their win, the Angels also completed a much needed series victory. After Los Angeles secured a comfortable win in the opener, the Royals fought back superbly in Game 2 to keep the series alive. However, despite having the momentum on their side, the
Royals were unable to cross the finish line.
Starting pitcher Will Smith paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound as he gave up seven hits and four runs in just five innings to take his eighth loss of the season. Relief pitchers Louis Coleman, Aaron Crow, Kelvin Herrera and Greg Holland
combined to pitch four scoreless innings but their effort went in vain.
For the Angels, starter Dan Haren grabbed his 11th win of the season after he gave up just five hits and three runs while striking-out five batters. He will be looking to continue his good work on his next start to cement his place on Angels’
big league roster.
"Our bullpen came in and just got out after out in a game where they've got some guys that can drive the ball on their side where one mistake can tie the game," Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia said. "These guys are pitching with their backs against the wall
and did a great job."
"The amount of games we can lose is very limited, so every loss hurts," Haren said. "It's not that we're not trying to catch Texas. For us rather than scoreboard watch, our games are so important. We just can't lose that many games. Every game is so magnified
right now."
Torii Hunter provided the Angels with a perfect start as he singled to right in the first inning. However, the star of the show was Mark Trumbo who smacked a mighty three run home-run to centre in the second inning to extend Angels’ lead to 4-0.
Jeff Francoeur and Tony Abreu made useful contributions to help Royals reduce the deficit to 3-4 but the Angels held on to secure a deserving victory.
