Kansas City Royals outclassed by Seattle Mariners 6-9 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals lost to the Seattle Mariners 6-9 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Tuesday, July 17 in the second game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Starting pitcher Ryan Verdugo took the loss after he gave up eight hits and six runs in just over one inning. It was an embarrassing outing for the Royals’ starter and it will be great to see if he can bounce back from such a humiliating defeat.
"I left the ball up a little. I might have been a little too amped up. I was nervous on the drive up here, but it didn't really affect me," Verdugo added. "I just really didn't execute pitches too well. I just left a few pitches up and they took advantage.
I know I still have to go out and execute."
Seattle had the better of their opponents in series opener as well and it will be a huge upset if they fail to complete the sweep against the struggling Royals.
Right now, the Mariners are at the bottom the American League West Division standings table and it will be interesting to see if they can start to win on a regular basis to end the season on a high note.
Royals, on the other hand, have no one to blame except themselves. Ned Yost and company have looked completely out of sorts after the All Star Break.
Practically, the Royals may not have any chance to make it to the post-season but they can certainly make themselves proud by showing some more fighting abilities and determination.
Jesus Montero doubled to deep centre in the first inning to put the Mariners on the board. Justin Smoak homered to left to extend the Mariners’ lead to 3-0.
For the Royals, Alex Gordon tripled to deep right-centre and Alcides Escobar earned an RBI single to centre. Billy Butler also made a useful contribution with the bat as he singled to right in the third to reduce Mariners’ lead to 6-3.
Lorenzo Cain hit a two run home-run in the bottom of the ninth but Seattle held on to their lead comfortably to take a 2-0 advantage in the series.
