Kansas City Royals pick up options on relief pitcher Jose Mijares – MLB News
Kansas City Royals have exercised team options on relief pitcher, Jose Mijares and signed him to a one-year contract worth $925,000. The Royals general manager, Dayton Moore was very excited about Jose Mijares and his one year’s stay with the Royals organisation.
He explained that Mijares’ arrival will give more depth to their 40-man roster next season.
Moore said, “You have to have multiple options and a lot of depth with your bullpen. Because if you’re going to win games, the bullpen is gonna get worked a lot. We feel like (manager) Ned (Yost) has the necessary weapons to match up the last third of a
game.”
He added, “He’s been throwing the ball with consistency and velocity and attacking guys. And over the last three years, he’s been a very consistent performer when matching up against left-handed hitters. We’re not trying to put pressure on them. We’re just
trying to create as much depth as we can.”
Mijares’ last season’s performance has certainly been on top as he achieved an exceptional 4.59 ERA with the Minnesota Twins. He might have stayed longer with the Twins, but his desire to test his ball skills with another team in the league, has brought
him into the Royals’ roster for 2012.
Mijares has signed with the Royals management as free agent. He is one of the few players in the Major League who has been persuaded by many MLB teams including the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, New York Mets, Cleveland Indians, Detroit
Tigers, Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies and Texas Rangers. Despite a range of offers, he finally chose to sign with the Royals in order to achieve his goal to excel further in the league.
His stats were the main reason why the Royals signed him with a handsome deal. Last season, Mijares went 4.59 ERA along with 30 strikeouts and consistent 1.69 WHIP while his career 3.16 ERA with 118 strikeouts and 1.31 WHIP also make him a true ball player.
Many experts are now saying that his arrival in the Royals roster will certainly boost the club’s winning chances next year.
