Kansas City Royals rout Detroit Tigers 2-1 to take series – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals edged the Detroit Tigers 2-1 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Thursday, August 30 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
With their win, the Royals also completed an emphatic series victory against the reigning American League Central Division standings leaders. Credit must be given to the Royals for the way they used their home conditions throughout the season.
Second baseman Johnny Giavotella grounded into fielder’s choice to shortstop in the fifth inning to break the deadlock and put Royals on the board. Alex Gordon smacked a solo home-run to right centre in the sixth to double the Royals’ lead 2-0. For the Tigers,
Johnny Peralta earned an RBI single to centre in the eighth inning.
"Close ballgames, high intensity in the ninth inning, so it was a good team win -- all three of them," Gordon said.
"Guthrie and Chen did a great job the past two nights, especially against this offense. It's pretty tough to do, to shut them down to one run in 18 innings," he added. "Our bullpen came in and did the job again. The home run was a key at-bat and gave us
the win."
Manager Ned Yost will be extremely happy with the outcome of the all three games. Tigers entered the series as the favourites but the Royals gave them a taste of their own medicine. The finale was played on a very competitive note as both teams fought for
supremacy.
Royals held their nerves and outplayed their opponents in finer details of the game. It will be interesting to see if Yost and company can continue their impressive form over the next few weeks to end the season on a bright note.
Starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie had an excellent time on the mound as he gave up one run in seven plus effective innings to grab his third win of the season. Relief pitcher Tim Collins, Aaron Crow and Kelvin Herrera combined to pitch three scoreless innings
to help Kansas City hold on to their one run lead.
The Royals will be happy with their performance as they managed to beat the mighty Tigers.
