Kansas City Royals slip to Boston Red Sox 1-5 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals were beaten by the Boston Red Sox 1-5 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Monday in the finale of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The Red Sox needed a win desperately and Cody Ross helped them do just that by driving in crucial runs in the third and the sixth innings.
After edging the Red Sox 10-9 in Game 2, they had an excellent chance to secure a rare series win at Fenway Park but that did not turn out to be the case. It will be interesting to see if Ned Yost and company can find winning ways in their next series.
Royals’ starting pitcher Luke Hochevar put up a fine performance as he gave up five runs on eight hits in eight innings but the Red Sox were too hot to handle on Monday. Alex Gordon hit a sacrifice fly to right in the first inning to put Royals on the board.
Red Sox fought back immediately to level the score 1-1 in the first inning. Cody Ross drove in two runs and James Loney added a single to left centre in the sixth to lift Boston to a much needed victory.
"When I had to go back on the DL in July it was very disappointing, especially when I didn't expect my body to react the way it did," Red Sox’s starter Daisuke Matsuzaka said after getting his first win. "But the encouraging part was it wasn't my elbow.
I didn't know if I'd be able to come back strong this year, but I felt better than I did before I had Tommy John."
"Obviously he's going to get another start -- two, three, four or five," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said. "He might finish strong throwing like that."
Right now, the Red Sox are placed fourth on the American League East Division standings table and their chances of reaching post season are almost over. However, they can certainly make themselves proud by ending the season on a positive note.
Royals, on the other hand, once again struggled to execute their game plan and paid a heavy price.
