Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Gil Meche retires due to shoulder problems - MLB News
After suffering multiple shoulder injuries from the last several years, the Kansas City Royals’ starting pitcher, Gil Meche has retired from the game. He announced his retirement on Tuesday issuing a detailed official statement which says everything regarding
Meche’s late retirement.
“After a lot of thinking and prioritizing of issues in my life, I have decided to retire from baseball. This is the hardest decision that I've ever faced, I came into this game as a starting pitcher and unfortunately my health, more accurately, my shoulder
has deteriorated to the point where surgery would be the only option this stage of my life I would prefer to call it a career rather than to attempt to pitch in relief for the final year of my contract.”
Meche, 33, certainly faced many problems in 2011 due to his right shoulder’s constant injuries. His last season was still pending but eventually he decided to retire from the game as he could not handle the pressure of always sitting in the bullpen watching
all other team-mates of his throwing pitches.
Meche played in 2007 as the Royals’ opening day starter and showed some good spirit. His most improved season with the Royals was 2008 where he achieved a 14-11 win loss record along with a consistent 3.98 ERA. Overall, he is retiring with a good 4.49 ERA
along with total 84-83 win loss record and 1050 strikeouts. With the Royals, he secured a 29-39 win loss record with 4.27 ERA in a total 111 games.
Before playing in the Royals roster, he had played in the Seattle Mariners franchise in 1999-2000-2003-2006. Winning an All Star honour in 2007, Meche has also won American League ‘Comeback Player of the Year’ in 2003.
In many experts’ view, Meche could have played longer in the Major League but constant injuries rattled him badly and he only ended up playing for ten years. Some say that despite his early retirement from the sport, Meche can now land early in the coaching
field as he will not only gain huge success there but his coaching career will also be quite long.
