Kansas City Royals surprise New York Yankees 4-3 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals edged New York Yankees 4-3 at the Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Thursday, May 3 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Mike Moustakas provided the Royals with a great start as he homered to centre in the second to give 1-0 lead to his team. Eric Hosmer, B. Butler, Alex Gordon and Moustakas combined to help the Royals take a 4-1 lead in the fifth, which proved to be sufficient for them to clinch a narrow win. Yankees’ Mariano Rivera injured his knee just before the start of play on Thursday evening and he is expected to have a surgery to repair the torn ACL.
"I thought it wasn't that bad, but it's torn," Rivera said after the game, pausing several times in the Yankees clubhouse to compose himself. "Have to fix it."
Royals’ win over the Yankees will be of great significance for them as it was their first in front of their home crowd. After losing ten straight games at the Kauffman Stadium, Ned Yost and company finally managed to execute their game plan to perfection to get off to a winning start.
The Royals have been struggling to make the most of available opportunities this season as they have won only eight out their 24 games. If they Rays can bring more consistency into their game play, they will surely have a chance to make it to the World Series finals. The season has just started and there are still a number of games to be played.
The All Star break will also help the Royals work out some of the problems in their game plan. It will be interesting to see if they can put up similar numbers in the upcoming games to win their first series at their home.
New York, on the other hand, is losing their way after making a decent start to their 2012 season campaign. Joe Girardi and his men will be looking to take complete advantage of their opponents’ unforced errors in the second game.
