Karachi City Cricket Association selector Basit Ali resigns
Pakistan’s former Test Batsman Basit Ali has resigned as the member of the selection committee of Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) after serving with the association for over two months.
The middle order batsman said, “I have resigned and decided not to work as a KCCA selector.” However, Basit refrained from disclosing the reasons which led to his decision. When asked about the reasons behind his action, he said, “I cannot give the reason
for my decision; however I will give an explanation to the KCCA President Sirajul Islam Bukhari.”
Basit was the member of three man selection committee which is headed by Jalaluddin a former fast bowler, while Zafar Ahmed is the third member of the committee.
Though the basic reason for Basit’s resignation remains unknown for the moment, it is believed that infighting among the members of the committee led to his demise. It has been reported that Jalaluddin and Zafar Ahmed were not happy with Basit’s way of doing
work.
Basit was also the dominant one among the three members and even though he was not heading the committee he was famous for getting his way in the final decision making process. This attitude irked the other two members which started the whole tension between
the selectors.
It has been reported many times that the other selection committee members used to have conflict of interest with Basit regularly on matters related to the selection of the players. But even with their opposition, Basit would never budge from his stance.
Basit has recently faced a lot of criticism for selecting players of his liking in the Karachi Blues squad. The original responsibilities of Basit were to select a 15 member squad only, but it has been reported that he would assert his authority in selecting
the playing eleven which was not encouraged by the KCCA management. It is believed that the conflict with the colleagues in the selection committee and then criticism for selecting wrong players may have led to his resignation.
The President of KCCA, however, said that he had not received any resignation from Basit as of yet. He said, “Ali has not contacted me and I have no clue about his decision.”
