Real Madrid assistant manager, Aitor Karanka, talked to the press after their 2-0 home win over Celta Vigo and he was satisfied with the way the make-shift defenders have performed.
Karanka had words of praise for Real Madrid’s makeshift defence which was able to keep a clean sheet last night against newly promoted club, Celta Vigo.
Los Blancos came into the game knowing that it was going to be tricky for them since they have been marred by injuries.
Three of their key defenders were missing from the backline. The trio of Marcelo, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-c13152 Coentrao was injured on last week’s international duty in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
However, the Real Madrid assistant coach was happy with the way his makeshift defenders performed last night.
“The back four has been very good, they have done a great http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684,” commented Karanka after the game.
He also praised defender, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sergio-Ramos-c33096, who took the leadership role in defence and said that he always knows his position.
“Sergio Ramos knows that position [full-back] very well and we know of the level that Varane can deliver.”
Meanwhile, the assistant coach also commented on the Ghanaian international, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Essien-c25294, and said that he is a versatile player who can hold and play at many positions in the field.
“The Coach also knows Michael perfectly well and knows that he offers many possibilities and that he can play in many positions and will do well in all of them.”
He also talked about Madrid's opponents, Celta Vigo, and the fact that they are a great passing side that can punish you if you let them play and control the ball possession.
“We knew that if Celta had the ball then they were going to create problems and we had to press high up the pitch and leave little space for the ball,” he explained.
Finally, Karanka was asked about whether there was any new development on Marcelo’s injury.
“There is no news regarding Marcelo, we are waiting and hopefully he will progress very well and return to Valdebebas.”
