I don't know about Tampa specifically, but different places are run slightly differently.  If you are going to a bar that has Karaoke night, then most likely it's a regular bar scene with a little set-up for karaoke.  Often times a small karaoke company may go to different bars on different nights.

If on the other hand you are going to a karaoke bar, meaning they do karaoke every night then there are usually two options: private and open.  Private means that your group is in a private room with your own machine and singing.  In this case you usually pay by the hour for the room and possibly also per song.  In the open option usually it's a regular bar scene and you are singing in front of everyone and people sign up on first come basis.  Usually with this option you do not pay per song or anything, but the wait could be extremely long if there are a lot of people there wanting to sing.

Karaoke is fun if you are willing and able to sing in front of people.
