Karate and ab punches?

My friend is in karate, and she told me they train your abs by punching them! Or hitting them with a bat! Is this true? Should I do it? I am in karate too. Should I do it at home? I would love ripped hard, tough abs!

  1. im a black belt in karate. yes, we do ab training by punching them occasionally, and it does give very nice results, but we dont use baseball bats. thats just stupid and will probably cause injuries. tho now that u mention it i think i might try it =D

  2. getting punched in the abs does build muscle if you breathe properly..i use a small length of pvc pipe when conditioning alone for ribs legs and arms but unless you know how to take a blow dont try the bat it hurts very very very bad...ive tried it but it feels better in a week if you gotta see for yourself...lol

  3. im in karate too, some styles focus of body conditioning that toughens you through light repetitive contact, that way when you do get hit in real life you'll be used to it. I cant imagine you could build muscle through getting hit however so you wouldn't get abs. If your in karate too you should defintly consider body toughening don't do it at home though you could seriously hurt your self if you don't know exactly what your doing! Talk to your sensei about it.

  4. That is definatley a farce. The only way i know of to get you're abs into shape is sit-ups or those excerscize machines. Don't go punching you're self. You'll just end up in pain. Hope this helps!

  5. in capoeira class our teacher does the same.

But of course not with a bat that's plain dangerous...
