  1. I agree with many of James' points. I'm glad that he actually took the time to watch said movies, and understands that movies can sometimes get people into martial arts.

In terms of overal quality, here's my list

    1) Karate Kid

    2) Never Back Down

    3) RedBelt.

Karate Kid has spectacular screenwriting and the interactions between the characters was very natural. That impressed me. Overall, I think it's an awesome movie.

However, I didn't like how Daniel learned his techniques by indirectly practicing them. It's a romtanticized notion. But then again, I think it was just exaggerated to emphasize a point -- that martial arts has more depth than whats at the surface. Also the fight scenes were kinda lame, in my opinion.

Never Back Down had decent screenwriting. It worked. Some parts were really strong, others a little over the top. Nonetheless, I enjoyed its commentary about internet videos and bored suburban kids. The fight scenes were excellent, though. They did what many thought to be impossibe; they made groundfighting look exciting even to the uninitiated.

I also liked how the act of training helped the main character, rather than his teacher just preaching to him. For my own experience, at least, I found that to be a more realistic reflection of how Martial Arts can help you be at peace with yourself.

RedBelt... Well, it just looks silly and over the top to me. Then again, judging only by commecial ,Never Back Down looked god awful. I can't make a final assessment, as I've never seen RedBelt. However, the concept of tieing a fighters hand to his body is pretty stupid, and I've just heard bad things about the movie.

  2. Karate Kid Wins this battle.

  3. never back down email me

    robynd96@yahoo.co.uk

  4. to be honest, i hate martial arts movies, prolly becuase i was forced to watch to many  jackie chan, jet lee and bruice lee movies by my martial arts obsessed older brother(lol torch has been passed, by i still hate the movies)

    karaty kid was pretty boring

Never back down was actually depressing :P reminds me of how weak i really am( even though it was really overdone and the acters themselves are not that strong)

red belt, never heard of it

  5. Karate Kid was a classic. a good depiction of the Old school student master relationship. Some really important lessons for the martial arts student as well.

The endless  drills have a point.

Never focus on the outcome of a confrontation: remain in the moment.

It is better to walk away from a fight if you can.

Confidence and competence go hand in hand.

    Loyalty is earned.

    Grace is given.

    Indomitable spirit usually wins.

  6. Havent seen red belt, but it has randy couture in it, so i would go with that. Boycotted "never back down" just from commercials its looked so stupid, i was like wow, these guys arent real fighters, just stupid on how the take of real fighters are

Karate kid comes in second just because of mr. Miyagi

  7. Karate Kid....

  8. Is this a question, or a statement with a question mark, or a thought?

  9. Karate Kid.  It's an absolute classic that teaches many important lessons about life.  It has the pure teacher/student relationship and addressing growing up.

The other movies are dumb, a waste of time, and pointless.

  10. Karate Kid is classic.

Never Back Down is really worth seeing. It is essentially a modernized version of Karate Kid, but using MMA.  The master is a Brazilian guy who wants to teach him the right way.

Red Belt was definitely last on this list.  It wasnt nearly as good as Never Back Down.  As a viewer, you are left with many unanswered questions and you have to make a lot of assumptions.  Way too much conspiracy in this one.  Fight sequences were ok, but not as well choreographed as Never Back Down.  Message in the dojo was ok, but plot left way too many holes.  Acting was ok too.  Couture was just an MMA fight announcer, now fighting, Frank Trigg was also in it, but no fighting.

By the way, I don't understand all the anti-MMA movie sentiment on this forum by people who have done martial arts for so long.

I always assumed that most of us over 30's were inspired to practice martial arts by watching old martial arts movies like Kill or Be Killed, Enter the Dragon, Bloodsport, The Last Dragon, etc.

Now we are suddenly too righteous to see the Martial Arts genre evolve for the next generation?

Martial Arts is always changing evolving, it always has been.  Personally, I don't see MMA as a "fad".  MMA will be around a while.  I am finding a way to use the MMA momentum for martial arts in the mainstream as a tool to teach people the value of martial arts training.

  11. Karate kid. It seems funny.

  12. Karate Kid.  It showed that just because you can beat someone up, doesn't mean you should

Never back down and Red belt are just fad movies because the UFC is so popular.   I have not seen either, and do not plan on it.

  13. What is the question?

No wait I know they are movies. Give me 10 points.

  14. Never Back Down has unfortunately spawned a generation of wannabees....all those questions about "how to win a street fight" and "i wanna take MMA".......please....

The only problem with MMA is that (get ready, this will be my only dis on MMA EVER!!!) pretty soon there will be "MMA" schools popping up everywhere, as there are now...and what do these schools teach i ask??? Will they teach striking, groundwork, submissions, etc??? yes

Will they teach the intricacies of groundfighting, or the form of striking....??? NO!!!

The problem is the wannabees that wanna take MMA are going in with no martial arts experience, whereas a seasoned martial artist learning multiple styles is way more proficient...

At least Karate Kid was honest, it made a h**l of a lot of kids take up Karate, not just want to go beat up the school bully...

Redbelt is not out yet...so no one knows...

    but for Martial Arts Value:

    Karate Kid

    Redbelt

    Never Back Down

  15. if the question is:

"which one sucks the most?" then why pick, c**p is c**p.

what do you care if there is a pile of stinky or less stinky **** put on your plate and you are told to eat it, you wouldn't so why waste time figuring out which one is the worst?
