Karatsev/Karlovskiy beat Grinter/Patrombon in Boys' Doubles opening round – US Open 2011
Russians Aslan Karatsev and Evgeny Karlovskiy survived the bashing in the second set to battle past Jaden Grinter of New Zealand and Jeson Patrombon of Philippines 6-4, 0-6, 10-6 in the first round of US Open at the Flushing Meadows
in New York on Monday. The Russians took almost an hour to oust their opponents in an evenly contested encounter.
Karatsev/Karlovskiy and the New Zealander/Filipino team won their serve in the first eight games of the opening set, levelling the score at 4-4. The Russians broke Grinter and Patrombon in the ninth game and consolidated on it,
sealing the set 6-4.
The unseeded smacked a couple of aces and 56 percent of the first deliveries in the first set. Karatsev and Karlovskiy gave a satisfactory service performance, capturing twelve of the eighteen first service points and eight of
the fourteen second service points. On the other hand, Grinter and Patrombon served superby as they bombarded six aces and claimed an amazing thirteen of the fourteen points on the first serve in the opening set. However, they failed to convert any of the
two break points they received on Karatsev and Karlovskiy’s serve and could not save the only break point they faced on their own serve in the opening set.
After losing a close first set, Grinter and Patrombon looked completely different players as they were almost flawless in the second set. The New Zealander/Filipino duo did not lose even a single game and grabbed six straight games
to win the set 6-0.
Grinter and Patrombon hit 50 percent of the first serves and a single ace in the second set. They won five of the eight points on the first serve and seven of the eight points on the second serve in the second set. The unseeded
team returned brilliantly, winning a a whopping 12 of the eighteen receiving points. Grinter and Patrombon saved all the four break points they faced and capitalised on three of the five break point opportunities they created on the Russian pair’s serve in
the second set.
Karatsev and Karlovskiy regained their form and bounced back in the match tie-break as they bagged two mini-breaks and capitalised on them to seal it 10-6. They kept their first serve percentage at 50 percent and did not lose any
point on their serve in the match tie-break.
The Russians are slated to play Brett Clark and Martin Redlicki of USA or British/Austrian pair of George Morgan and Dominic Thiem in the second round.
