Karatsev/Karlovskiy dispose of Morgan/Pavic in Boys’ doubles – French Open 2011
Yet another upset at in the Boys’ Doubles draw at the 2011 Roland Garros, as the second seeded pair of George Morgan of Great Britain and Mate Pavic of Croatia fell apart in the contest against the Russian duo of Aslan Karatsev
and Evgeny Karlovskiy in the second round of the Grand Slam tournament. The Russian competitors wrapped up victory in the three-set thriller at 4-6, 7-5, 12-10, to make it to the quarter-final of the French Open.
The second seeded pair had a brilliant start to the contest and appeared in complete control of the game in the early stages. However, an amazing comeback from the Russian team stunned everyone, as they reeled of the following
two sets to register an emphatic victory over the top seeded duo.
Morgan and Pavic concluded the opening set in merely 27 minutes to get the upper hand in the contest but gradually lost their way in the next set. The Russian pair gathered up pace steadily and made a breakthrough in the second
set to level the contest at 1-1, enforcing a third set. The enthralling decider went on neck-to-neck before a mini-break from the Russians marked an end to the voyage of the second seeded Morgan and Pavic in the French Open.
The second seeded duo had a poor first serve precision of merely 49 percent in the game and coughed six costly double faults to assist their opponents to victory. Karatsev and Karlovskiy had a brilliant serve accuracy of 75 per
cent and reeled off 34 out of 55 points on it en route to victory. Apart from the opener, the Russians proved very miser in spilling out unforced errors and conceded just two double faults in the entire matchup.
The two teams registered three serve breaks each in the contest, dragging the match into a decisive third set. Morgan and Pavic stung two break points in the opening set to reach 6-4, and got one up in the contest. They failed
to sustain the momentum in the following sets and a series of errant strokes from Morgan and Pavic allowed the Russian opponents to bounce back in the game.
Karatsev and Karlovskiy fired two serve breaks to conclude the second set at 7-5 and carried on their winning momentum in the final set as well. Both teams were very competitive in the decider but a critical mini-break from Karatsev
and Karlovskiy sealed victory for them at 12-10, sending them in the quarter-final of Roland Garros.
Karatsev and Karlovskiy will take on the pair of Maxim Dubarenco of Moldova and Vladyslav Mmanafov of Ukraine in the quarter-final clash of the French Open.
