rank the centers on whos best,

i've decided that wilt is the best center to play the game, but im wondering who comes up 2nd 3rd and 4th on that list.

russel has the rings and rebounding titles but never was the offensive force that shaq and kareem was.

shaq was just simply dominatent,

kareem had the best go to move, the games ever seen in his hook shot.

  10. 1 Kareem-It's showtime!

#2 Russell-Fantastic defender and rebounder, both of which win games.

#3 Shaq-All he could do was dunk. Great center, decent defender, but still...

  11. Agreed that Wilt was first. Here's my thoughts on the other guys-

Shaq- Prime Shaq was arguably the best offensive center of all time, including Wilt. He had the efficiency of Charles Barkley from the field- which is outstanding, and got to the line/drew fouls as well anybody: was much less finesse than the other scoring centers- but because of his size, that's fine. He was good defensively-  mainly because of his size he was a pretty good man to man defender- but has been known to be prone to foul trouble: it's fluctuated between being a large problem in his rookie years, still a factor in his prime, and recently he's gone back to picking up stupid fouls (because he doesn't move his feet nearly as well as he used to)- on a career based list, he's last, but if were talking about who was the best, then he moves ahead of Russell.

Kareem- Prime Kareem has the least weaknesses of all these guys: great scorer, great passer, good free throw shooter (though not as good at getting to the line because he was more of a finesse type of player), great defensively- worse than Russell, but definitely better than Shaq. If you take into account the free throw shooting, Kareem was actually more efficient than Shaq- which speaks volumes for his skill since he usually took shots that were farther out. Not as good a rebounder as Shaq, but in his prime it was very close.

Russell- On an All-Time list he'd be ahead of Shaq, but if were talking about who "the better player" was, then he's probably below, at least in the modern era. Was the best defender of this group, best rebounder, best at orchestrating a fastbreak off a defensive play: nothing special offensively though- not very efficient, didn't have a whole lot of moves, though a great passer (like all of these guys).

I'd have to say Kareem was the best of these guys- talking strictly primes, I'd take Shaq by a very slight margin (because of his efficiency, superior rebounding, and he may have been the hardest to stop because of size).

But, Kareem wins overall as the best player- his peak was a little lower than Shaq's in terms of scoring (I stress "little"- because he was still a comparable scorer to Shaq- more volume but slightly less efficient, comparable rebounder, easily a better defender, better passer), yet he remained effective for far longer- his longevity is unmatched by centers.

From the time he entered the league- 1970 to 1982- he was a 25+ scorer and a very good rebounder. During that time, he won 5 MVPS, led the Bucks to 1 championship with an aging Oscar, and led the Lakers to another championship. From 1982- 1986: he was still an effective offensive player, but his rebounding/defense were definitely worse, and he struggled more than he had earlier in his career with the stronger bangers (these were usually the players Kareem had to work a little harder against)- most noticeably against Moses Malone in the 83 Playoffs, where Malone killed him on the glass.

But, that's about 12 seasons where he was MVP caliber and 4 seasons where he was still all-star good.

Compare that with Shaq- who had about 10 seasons as very good (though he was at his absolute best for only 2 years, Kareem was at his absolute best for about 6 years) and 4 seasons where he was still all star good- to add Kareem was an ironman while Shaq's had his troubles staying on the court because of his injuries- and it becomes fairly obvious that Kareem was the better player because he had a comparable peak, but was better for far longer, and amazingly durable.

Kareem was one of the few centers in history who would often take the last second shot- and he able to do that because of his skyhook, as you mentioned. Compare that to Shaq, who at various times, has needed to even be pulled out of the game because of his absymmal free throw shooting.

So, yeah, on an All Time List that takes into account everything (careers) it would be:

    1) Kareem

    2) Russell

    3) Shaq

    On a "best player list":

    1) Kareem

    2) Shaq

    3) Russell
