Karen Lunn earns victory in the Lalla Meryem Cup – Golf News
The Australian Karen Lunn fired a final round of five-under par 66 in the Lalla Meryem Cup to secure a three-stroke margin victory over Marianne Skarpnord and Tandi Cuningham on Sunday, March 25, 2012.
Lunn started her final round with a deficit of one stroke. Moreover, the tournament remained open for the participants until she made a late charge on her back-nine on Sunday.
She scored a total of five birdies, including three in a row, starting from the 10th hole to outclass her opponents at the Golf de l'Ocean in Agadir.
Her overall score for the tournament was 12-under par, which was enough to record her 10th victory on the Ladies European Tour.
The highlight of the day included Lunn’s amazing 50-footer on the par-three 12th. At the same place, the co-leader, Jade Schaeffer, lost two points after landing the ball in the rocks.
"We got to the turn and I think there were seven or eight players within two shots of the lead so it was game on for anyone," said Lunn.
"I just managed to play the back nine really well and made some putts and that's what you have to do. I haven't been making the putts but this week I did and managed to sneak over the line".
While playing the final two holes, she had a two-stroke lead over her rivals. She then continued on performing well and carded two par shots to end the event on a high note.
"It's very nerve wracking. No matter how many times you win every one is very difficult," said Lunn.
With this win, she has now got a chance to participate in the Evian Masters and British Open in the 2012 season.
The 46-year-old Australian already has the Women's British Open title to her name, which she earned in the 1993 edition. Afterwards, she failed to repeat the same performance in any of the major events.
"This means I hopefully get to play in the Evian Masters and British Open, so it changes everything," she said.
This year, she is hopeful to get into the tournament with the same frame of mind and some good finishes to her name.
