Karin Prinsloo takes home Women’s 200m freestyle crown: Day two – 2011 All Africa Games
Day two of the 2011 All African Games got off to a strong start at the Zimpeto National Stadium, in Maputo, Mozambique, on Tuesday, September 6. The session of the meet conducted the Women’s 200m freestyle event.
In the corresponding race, Karin Prinsloo of South Africa impressed the arena by powering the wall with a record time of 1 minute and 59.84 seconds. The victory was her third gold medal of the meet. More importantly, Prinsloo beat Melissa Corfe’s previous
meet record of 2 minutes and 02.45 seconds, set back in 2007. After the race, Karin was really excited and pleased with her individual swim. Prinsloo secured two gold medals in the Women’s 100m freestyle and 50m back-stroke events yesterday.
In the meantime, Zeineb Khalfallah of Tunisia took home the silver medal in the 200m freestyle race with a winning mark of 2 minutes and 05.44 seconds. On the other hand, Natasha De Vos South Africa secured the bronze medal on the podium by posting a matchless
time of 2 minutes and 06.20 seconds. While speaking about her individual splash, De Vos stated that she was contented with her effort and that she will definitely continue her winning form for futuristic swimming events.
In the corresponding swim, Kristen Lapham of Zimbabwe earned fourth place honours with a striking time of 2 minutes and 07.22 seconds. Meanwhile, Kristen Lapham’s team-mate, Nicole Horn rounded out the top five after she touched the finishing wall with an
inspiring mark of 2 minutes and 08.00 seconds.
Malia Mghezzi Bekhouche of Algeria was placed sixth in a time of 2 minutes and 09.16 seconds, while Shannon Austin wound up seventh with a mark of 2 minutes and 12.36 seconds. Last, but not the least, Raquel Lourenco earned eighth place honours in a time
of 2 minutes and 32.19 seconds.
All the athletes took a huge ovation from the crowd and judges as a result of their scintillating swims, while the winners were awarded medals and accolades after the end of the session.
