Karin Prinsloo wins Women’s 100m backstroke semi-final: Day two - South African LC Nationals
Karin Prinsloo of NTS-NT won the semi-final of Women’s 100m backstroke on second day of the South African Long Course Nationals at the KZN Aquatic-Kings Park Centre in Durban on Tuesday, April 17.
The 22-year-old Prinsloo showered her expertise in the double lap backstroke event and outshined her challengers for the fastest qualification spot in the final round.
With her astounding efforts, she remained considerably faster from her following rival and secured the fastest qualification spot of the race by tapping the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 01.15 seconds.
Prinsloo was trailed by Ashley-Cooper of WPA-WP, who stayed nearly two seconds slower from her and hit the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 03.22 seconds.
The 19-year-old Ashley-Cooper was trailed by Lehesta Kemp of NTS-NT, who proved her eligibility for the third fastest spot of the race by clocking a time of 1 minute and 03.44 seconds.
The fourth qualification spot of the event was secured by Kemp’s teammate, Amy N Peens, who remained 1.09 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and clocked an effort of 1 minute and 04.53 seconds.
Peens was followed by Janneke Malan of KZNA-KZ, who proved her mettle for the fifth best position by producing a time of 1 minute and 04.75 seconds.
Following that, the crowd witnessed mind-blowing efforts of Chad Le Clos in the Men’s 200m freestyle semi-finals. The 20-year-old Le Clos, who won gold medal of the 400m Individual medley on opening day of the championship, occupied the top qualification
spot in the freestyle playoff.
With his commendable efforts, he remained prominently ahead of his challengers and posted a time of 1 minute and 47.20 seconds. He was followed by Darian Townsend, who ended his swim in the second place by clocking 1 minute and 48.26 seconds.
Townsend was trailed by Sebastien Rousseau, who earned third position with the timing of 1 minute and 48.58 seconds. Similarly, Jean Basson claimed fourth finest position of the semi-finals, as he posted 1 minute and 49.02 seconds.
Furthermore, the championship will continue for five more days and will end on April 22.
