Karine Icher finishes as best French contender at CME Group Titleholders
French Karine Icher was one of the few underdogs at the CME Group Titleholders who fought hard to remain in contention till the final moments of the season-ending tournament.
The CME Group Titleholders, where the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) battle culminates, featured a fearsome roster packed with big names, but stars like Icher proved their worth.
Icher shot an overall score of 280 to finish sixth at The TwinEagles Club, Naples, Florida—something that has made her the strongest LPGA contender in her country, France.
Still struggling to win her first LPGA tournament, Icher turned professional in 2000 and joined the Tour in 2003—way too long a time for her to polish her skills and make her mark. However,
some observers insist that the French star has what it takes to trouble top-ranked contenders in any event.
Observers pointed out that after teetering on the edge of failure for a long time, the 33-year-old golfer has finally burst onto the pro scene after some eye-catching showings of a solid short
game on the greens.
The greens of The TwinEagles Club are thought to be some of the trickiest of all in the United States, but Icher remained focused and made almost perfect strokes on most of the holes.
Icher started her first round in an impressive style as she posted a 67, stepping up her scoring campaign right from the start of the tournament. However, she could not maintain her momentum
in the final round, as she made mistakes on some holes and ended up recording a 73.
South Korean Na Yeon Choi was the star performer at the season-ending event, as she fired a total score of 274 to win the title.
On the other hand, Japanese Ai Miyazato also displayed an electrifying performance as she took the fifth spot thanks to an overall 279.
“The first shot I couldn't get the green and I came back all the way again and I had the same chip shot and couldn't get up and down from there,” Miyazato said at the end of the third round.
“But I didn't feel anything bad.  It was still on the 2nd hole, I thought I can get it back, I know I can get it back in the back nine”.
