Karine Icher plays well at Kingsmill Championship
After a rickety start at the Kingsmill Championship, French Karine Icher swung into action in the final three rounds and finished tied for the third position along with Danielle Kang.
Icher, who was not among the favourite contenders for the Kingsmill Championship, held at Williamsburg, Virginia, shot a 70 in the first round, which helped her ramp up pressure on her nearest rivals.
Most of the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) stars just did not know what to do when they faced bad weather conditions during the tournament.
The weather caused the light to fade in the opening round, dampening spirits of players as the officials had to suspend the match.
Icher, however, tried her best to remain in contention till the final moments of the much-hyped tournament. The French star displayed a stunning performance in the last two rounds as she fired a 67 and 65 on the third and fourth day respectively.
The LPGA titan started her last round with plenty of enthusiasm as she drained a birdie on the very first hole.
She then parred the next four holes in a row and bagged appreciation from the spectators once again, as she shot two straight birdies on the sixth and seventh hole.
Icher’s performance in the last round was nearly as good as what she did on Saturday. She hit the ball quite well, but scored much better compared with the third round.
Other contenders, who battled hard through the four rounds, included Paula Creamer of the United State and South Korean Jiyai Shin. Creamer and Shin posted an overall score of 268 each to tie for the first position in the final round, and the match stretched into playoff.
Creamer, who was expected to unveil her usual putting skills at Williamsburg, lived up to the hopes of American spectators and gave a tough time to strong South Korean rivals.
Speaking to the media about her stunning performance, Creamer said that she is satisfied with her performance, but is wary of her nearest rival in the next phase that will see her battle it out with Shin.
Although an LPGA member since 2003, Icher still has not been able to win an event on the Tour. However, the professional golfer has proved her mettle on the Ladies European Tour (LET) as she has racked up 6 titles so far.
