Karine Icher ties for fifth in second round at Ohio
French Karine Icher, who is not among the hot favourite contenders for the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic 2012, exhibited an electrifying performance in the second round of the prestigious tournament as she carded a 69 to tie for the fifth position on the leaderboard.
Icher is one of the non-Asian players standing inside the top 5 at the end of the second round. Asian contenders appear to have kept their American and European rivals at bay so far by grabbing the top positions in the second round.
Although under pressure a little, Icher kicked off the second round with plenty of enthusiasm but could not judge the ball well. She carded a bogey on the very first hole, which rattled her a bit. However, she was quick enough to regain her composure and she parred the next five holes.
On the par-5 7th hole, she faltered and ended up carding her second bogey for the round.
Commentators said that although the French star got off to a sensational start in the opening round of the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) tournament, she could not face her rivals with the same vigour as strong gusts of wind caused trouble on the course.
Commentators also pointed out that Icher was not expected to make such a solid start, especially when most of the battle-hardened American and European contenders are struggling to improve their positions on the leaderboard.
Relatively less experienced than most of her fellow Europeans in the roster, Icher did not let her rivals rattle her as she played a natural game on most of the holes.
The rising LPGA star impressed the spectators when she shot two back-to-back birdies on the 8th and 9th hole.
On the back nine, the French prodigy displayed a far better performance as she avoided carding any bogey and drained two birdies.
Speaking to the media at the end of the round, she said that the weather was troublesome but overall she did fine.
“A little trouble at the beginning, made stupid mistakes. But the course is a little bit tougher today. Then I had couple birdies, so give me more confidence to finish the round. I had a birdie on 17 and another one on 13. So that's good,” Icher said.
