Karine Icher tumbles to tie for ninth in Japan
French Karine Icher slipped to a tie for ninth at the Mizuno Classic 2012, as she posted an overall 211.
Icher was not among the favourites for the three-day Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournament, but she played better than expectations and took the share of third position after she posted a 69 in the second round.
However, a 71 in the third and final round brought her crashing down to a tie for the ninth position on the leaderboard.
Although it was not a poor display of game, commentators said that the French star could have done far better in the final round.
With calm winds blowing all day on Sunday, most of the contenders capitalised on favourable weather conditions and posted big scores. On the other hand, the first round saw rough winds whipping through the course on and off, which made it difficult for players to judge the ball well on the greens.
The second day also troubled players, as the weather conditions remained almost the same.
“Today was really windy just like yesterday. It makes the course very difficult, especially finding the right club. So I had a lot of mistakes,” Icher said on Saturday.
“I couldn’t tell if I was hitting into the wind or out of the wind. I had a few good shots, but missed a lot of short putts. So I’m going to try to give myself better opportunities tomorrow. But I had a pretty good round so I’m happy”.
Despite it was windy out there on the course, the rising star stood her ground and managed to improve her position on the leaderbord.
Icher started the round on Sunday with heaps of confidence as she parred the first four holes. She, however, could not keep a grip on her short game and fumbled on the greens of difficult par-3 5th.
Regaining her composure, the LPGA titan shot her first birdie on the 7th. Then she posted another two birdies on the 9th and 11th hole.
American Stacy Lewis impressed her fans once again, as she lifted the title after posting an overall 205. She looked fired up on Sunday, as she rattled off ten birdies to subdue second-round leader Bo-Mee Lee.
