Karl Dowland and Chris Lee claim Men’s Doubles title at Wellington North Open 2012
New Zealand’s Karl Dowland and Chris Lee entertained their home fans as they claimed Men’s Doubles title after overpowering their lower ranked challengers Luke Charlesworth and Andrey Degtyarev in final clash of the Wellington North Open 2012 in New Zealand,
on Saturday, July 21.
Karl and Chris, who were top seeded players in the Men’s Doubles draw of the championship, had to dig into their arsenal and they proved their supremacy over their opponent to end up the battle in a thrilling fashion.
The higher ranked Karl and Chris played at their best speed but failed to take the opening game. However, they powered their way back and took the following two games to wrap up a superb victory over their challengers in three games.
Luke and Andrey, on the contrary, played good badminton in opening set and won it. However, they played quivering badminton in the following sets and eventually lost the match with a decent score on the board.
The opening game started in a tough manner when both pairs showed their true potential by putting up spectacular show of attacking badminton and remained close until the interval.
After the break, Karl and Chris tried their best to dominate the pace of rallies but failed to show their brilliance and lost the set by a margin of 18-21.
In the following set, both pairs again kept their fans engaged by playing at their best speed and the score again remained close until the mid-game interval.
After the interval, Karl and Chris managed to take a small lead by playing good badminton and maintain their rhythm to end up the set with a tight margin of 21-19.
In the deciding set, Karl and Chris remained dominant for the most part as they played controlled badminton this time and took a reasonable lead until the break.
After the interval, Karl and Chris continued putting up staggering run without dropping their speed and ended the set with a comfortable margin of 21-15.
The top seeded Karl and Chris ended the final contest in a smashing fashion by a thrilling score of 18-21, 21-19 and 21-15.
