The Bayern Munich chairman has insisted that the midfielder did not pick up a deliberate yellow card against Marseille in the Champions League quarter-final.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Bastian-Schweinsteiger-c7374 did not go into the books against Marseille deliberately. He was talking after Bayern’s first-leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Les Phoceens on Wednesday,
March 28, at the Stade Velodrome after the Bavarians winning 2-0. Mario Gomez and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arjen-Robben-c6521 scored for the visiting side in the win.
Schweinsteiger was making a comeback from injury in this game and was on a yellow card. If the player received a booking in the second-leg, he would certainly have missed the first-leg of the semi-final. The midfielder was introduced
in the 71st minute in place of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Toni-Kroos-c35425 and earned himself a yellow card in the 80th minute for a foul on Valbuena.
This means that the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Germany-c2904 international would miss the second-leg against the Ligue 1 side. However, his slate will be cleared if the Reds make it to the semis. Bayern would probably meet Real Madrid in the semi-final as Los
Blancos defeated APOEL Nicosia 3-0 in their first-leg fixture.
Rummenigge stated that the 27-year-old is an important player for Bayern and would desperately be needed in the latter stages of the competition. He clarified that the midfielder did not foul intentionally.
While talking to reporters after the game, the CEO further added: "We don't go getting yellow cards out of cleverness. For us, it is important that he's back and we know that we need Bastian for the final run-in. He did not do
it on purpose - we are not that clever."
On the other hand, Schweinsteiger also rejected claims of an intentional foul. He stated that it is not good for him to miss out on the second-leg as he needs sufficient playing time under his belt especially having returned from
a long layoff. Schweinsteiger thought that the referee was a bit harsh on him as it was his first tackle after coming on as a second-half substitute.
"You can't really think that because we are not even certain we will qualify for the semi-finals. I have missed plenty of games due to injury and I would like to have played another game, but now I am banned. It was my first foul
of the game, it was just a bit unfortunate," Schweinsteiger concluded.
Bayern will return to the league action on Saturday against Nuremberg before hosting Didier Deschamps’ side for the return leg on Tuesday, April 3.
