Karl Menzies and Jennifer Wheeler wins Global Import Sandy Spring Cycling Challenge: Cycling News
Karl Menzies of the United-Health Care Professional C team won the final event of Global Import Sandy Spring Cycling Challenge on Sunday. Karl Menzies took a total of 1 hour, 2 minutes and 7 seconds.
Karl left behind his fellow team-mate Jacob Keough, who performed well in the previous races. Hilton Clarke also showed his good performance in the stage and booked the third spot.
Keough maintains his overall classification in the stage. Following the seven days of intense racing, all the team worked hard, but the United-Health Care team showed an excellent performance in the stage.
After the event Keough said "When we got everyone onboard, I said to the guys 'We've got to go full gas and try and lap this field.'"
Jake Keough took the lead on the strip along with three other riders, including his team-mate Hilton Clarke, Andrew Dahlheim and Raymond Kreder.
With 23 laps left, a group of 15 riders came together in the race and gained advantage of 10 minutes over the peloton. In the final minutes of racing, Keough was in good form, but Menzies maintained his speed and cross the finish line ahead of the other
riders.
Menzies was at the thirteen spot in sixth part of the race and also grabbed fourth position in the fifth part of the race.
In the women’s category, Jennifer Wheeler of the Tibco/To the top team won Global Import Sandy Spring Cycling Challenge. Previously, she was in 26th place in the seventh stage and grabbed 11th position in the fifth part of the race.
Jennifer Wheeler took a total of 58 minutes and 40 seconds in the race. Edita Janeliunaite of the Colavita team was in second place with the difference of 2 seconds. Nicky Wangsgard performed well in the race and grabbed a third spot.
After winning the stage she said, "We tried a bunch of stuff this week, so today our strategy was just to look for opportunities and take advantage of them."
In the last laps of the race, Nicky Wangsgard was joined by other riders including, Edita Janeliunaite of the Colavita Team. Both of them worked together on the strip and took a lead, but in the final two laps, Janeliunaite was left behind by Wangsgard.
With the help of her Tibco/To the Top, Jennifer Wheeler crossed the finish line ahead of the other cyclists and took a victory.
