Karl wants a multi-year extension from the Nuggets
After missing the final two months of Denver Nuggets’ campaign last season because of a form of throat cancer, head coach George Karl is set to return to the Nuggets bench when they kick
off their campaign in the 2010-11 NBA season.
And even if their season hasn’t started yet, the veteran bench tactician is already looking forward for next year, and he wants to return to Denver with a multi-year contract.
According to the 59-year old coach, he’ll probably spend the rest of his life in Denver, and re-signing with the Nuggets is his priority, although he believes that he’ll be receiving a lot
of offers from different teams once his contract with the Nuggets ends next summer.
Karl, who signed a one-year contract extension in February, isn’t ready to accept another one-year deal from the Nuggets because he is slowly reaching the twilight of his coaching career
and is looking to secure his future.
"Probably not,'' Karl said when asked about the possibility of signing another one-year deal. "I'm getting old enough to where I can get one more good deal. If I can't get it in Denver, it
will be interesting to see if I can get it in the free market.''
Karl, who is 14 victories away from becoming the seventh NBA coach to reach 1,000 wins, is also concerned with his health, but he believes that he’s already and still good enough to coach
for several years more, and he’s hoping that he and the Nuggets will start discussions about their future.
"I'm open to any discussion, but that's not my call," Karl said. "I'm in an evaluation year myself. I'm worried more about me, and how I'm doing with my health. The priority of a new contract
is on my radar screen, but it's not something we've talked about.''
George Karl and the Denver Nuggets will kick of their campaign this year when they host the Utah Jazz on Wednesday.
