Karlovic and Stepanek among high-profile withdrawals from Wimbledon

Ivo Karlovic and Radek Stepanek were two of the other five casualties that had to withdraw from the All England Tennis Club due to injuries.

The 6’10’’ inches tall Croatian, Ivo Karlovic, had to pull out of the championships because of his prevailing foot condition, and the Czech superstar, who is ranked 25th in the official rankings, was having trouble with his knee.

Another Croatian joining his countryman on the sidelines is Mario Ancic. Also known as the Super Mario, Ancic has previously proven to be a formidable contender at the greens of Wimbledon. He has to back out because of back trouble, which has been persistent since some time now.

The list continued with a leg injury taking the better of Argentinean David Nalbandian. David’s credits go back to 2002, when he lost in the final against Australian Lleyton Hewitt.

The French don’t have much to cheer at the all England Club this year either, as the in-form Richard Gasquet ruled himself out owing to his ailing ribs. Bad news for some is better for others as the seeded spots taken by Stepanek and Karlovic are taken by Victor Hanescu and Julien Benneteau of France.

Injuries have also troubled the female draw, as some of the favourites had to give in because of their various ailments. World number 5, Elena Dementieva, who was the semi-finalist in the last two versions of the championship, bowed out because of a calf injury. The same injury was responsible for her retirement from the French open’s semifinal against the eventual title holder Francesca Schiavone.

Even after these casualties, Wimbledon will be featuring tremendous class and competition in all of the draws. The World Cup of tennis is scheduled to start on Monday, the 21st of June, 2010.
