My baby is a spitter upper!(She'll be 6 weeks on Monday) The pediatrician gave her liquid Zantac a couple weeks ago, didn't work..We just got an ultrasound done of her belly to look for that medical problem that requires surgery, she's fine..I'm breast feeding but had to start supplementing on formula because I can't produce enough to fit her feeding needs. She was on Enfamil Lipil and then switched to Gentlease..NOw the doc told me to put her on Nutramigen..She is STILL SPITTIng evrything up..Sometimes she doesn't at all-but most the time does..I will give her another week to get used to the Nutramigen-how much Karo Syrup can I put in there to make it taste better for her? And what else does Karo Syrup help with? Thanks for all answers!!

  1. I wouldn't add any karo syrup, they are finding it has some ill effects. I took my son to the chiropractor for acid reflux, it took a few visits but it worked. You can also see if the doctor will prescribe Prevacid instead of Zantac. I am allergic to it so my doctor didn't want to chance my son being allergic too and the Zantac didn't work well for us either.

  2. You shouldn't be putting sugar in your baby's formula.  It's not healthy.

Do you mind if I ask why you think you weren't making enough milk for her?  I'm not being a breastfeeding n**i- I'm just trying to help you out on that front.  I suspect that you might have been making enough, but you got the thought in your head that it's possible you weren't making enough and you believed it.  If you were nursing on demand, you were making enough milk.

  3. My son started spitting up when he was about 6 wks old.  He was also put on meds and he still spits up.  The meds will not help with that.  The valve to a baby's stomach is weak and this is why some will come back up through it.  The meds help control the acid in baby's stomach so it doesn't hurt as much when they do spit.  Our ped told us if he's a spitter then he can and probably will do so until he's about a year old.  If your baby doesn't seem uncomfortable when feeding or spitting then I suspect everything is good.

I've never heard of putting anything in the formula to make it taste better.  The ped put us on Alimentum (same family as Nutramigen) and said it will probably taste terrible for him but if he's hungry he'll eat it.  And he does.  It's tempting to want to find something that we think will taste better for them but realistically at this age they don't have much to compare to and they'll eat it when they are hungry.  You didn't mention if the Karo was suggested by your doc or not but I'd only go with that on the advice of the doctor.

good luck!  i know exactly the challenge you are going through:)  everything is a stage right now and will get better.
