Karol Beck defeats Lewis Burton to qualify for the second round – Istanbul Challenger 2012 CH
Seventh seeded, Karol Beck, defeated the British native, Lewis Burton, in the first round of the American Express Istanbul Challenger 2012. The Slovakian bagged away his straight sets victory, 6-4, 6-2, in a
total of one hour and 23 minutes.
The 30-year-old, Beck held his opening serve in the initial set and confidently journeyed forward to secure a 2-1 lead. Burton was passionate to clamp away the lead and he successful evened out the score line
three times and broke Beck’s serve in the seventh game, marking a 4-3 lead. However, the Slovakian veteran quickly took note of his rival’s success and pocketed a 6-4 score to get one up in the contest.
Both players double faulted three times in the opener but the British challenger managed to attain 64 percent first serve accuracy, 15 of 23 points. Luckily, Beck secured eight of 11 first and nine of 13 second
delivery points but had a below average first serve accuracy of 46 percent in the set.
The Slovakian right-hander sustained his initial serve and broke his opponent’s serve in the fourth game to capitalize his 3-1 lead. However, towards the end, none of the players held their serves but the British
veteran broke his rival’s serve in the second last game and lost the final set by a 2-6 loss.
Although, Burton had a higher initial serve accuracy of 76 percent, he failed to dominate with a low first point conversation of 12 of 26 first and two of eight second. On the contrary, Beck had a below average
first serve of 52 percent and snatched 10 of 16 points in the closing set.
For the next round, Beck will face Riccardo Ghedin. The Italian qualifier rallied past the local challenger, Marsel Illhan, in the first round in straight sets, 7-6(8), 6-4. The Slovakian veteran will surely
have an easy way through if he maintains his focus and determination.
