Karol Beck defeats Mischa Zverev to sail into the last eight – Eckental Challenger 2011
The men’s singles, second round competition at the 2011 Eckental Challenger continued on November 2, 2011. Karol Beck (Slovakia) faced Mischa Zverev (Germany) in an exciting match on Center Court at, Germany.
29-year old Beck was dominant in aces as he delivered eight as compared to Zverev’s one in the match. Beck also conceded eight double faults but he won the first and second set to win the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
In the first set, Beck was way ahead of Zverev as he did not give the German any chance to narrow down the lead. The 24-year old Zverev did not score any ace in the first set for he was feeling intimidated by the Slovakian’s ability
to secure a dominating stance in the early goings of the game.
Beck, who ranks at the 104th spot in the world, had a 64% winning ratio on first serve as compared to his 273rd ranked opponent, who had a 58% winning rate.  Beck played all of his service games sensibly.
He did not let Zverev break any of his serves but conceded only a single double fault.
During the second set, Beck scored two aces and conceded a double fault once. He had a lower first serve winning ratio against the German. Zverev had double faults three times in the second set but his higher first serve winning
rate with 62% helped him win the second set, 6-3. In the second set, the Slovakian was unable to save the single breakpoint he conceded.
On the other hand, the German was able to save all five of his breakpoints giving him the lead into the second set by three games, helping him to tie the match with one set each.
In the third set, Beck was looking shaky against Zverev as he conceded six double faults. The German did not have any double faults, which was a positive factor for the German.
Zverev also had a relatively higher first serve winning ratio as compared to Beck. The decisive moments in the third set, however, came when Beck was able to save three out of his four breakpoints, having a 75% ratio. Zverev did
not give any extra points to his opponent but he was unable to retain his pace as the match progressed into the third set. Beck won the set 6-3.
Earlier in the tournament, Zverev had defeated Conor Niland (Ireland) on November 1, 2011. He was having a steady run in the tournament but he was not able to beat Beck. The German was unable to utilize the home ground advantage
as Beck moves into the next round of the tournament.
