Karol Beck outplays Pablo Carreno-Busta to reach the quarterfinals – Open Castilla y Leon 2011 CH
Number three seed in the tournament, Karol Beck of Slovakia won his matchup against the local wildcard entrant, Pablo Carreno-Busta, in the second round of Open Castilla y Leon, being played in Segovia, Spain, on Thursday afternoon.
The contest took one hour and thirty five minutes to conclude, with Beck settling the final scores at 7-6(6), 6-1, to qualify for the quarter-final of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
Carreno-Busta had a nice beginning to the matchup in the opening set, which he dragged to the tie breaker round before dropping it, but failed to live up to the expectations of the local crowd in the second set. He was absolutely devastated by the fury of his opponent in the second set to end his voyage at Open Castilla y Leon.
The third seeded Slovak delivered 59 per cent of his serve on target and spilled seven double faults in the entire contest. Carreno-Busta failed to capitalize upon his competitor’s mistakes and frittered away six break opportunities to remain at a disadvantage throughout the game.
Action started right from the very first game, with Beck breaking his opponent’s serve twice in a row to race away to 3-0 lead early in the contest. The Slovak reeled off 22 out of 30 first serve points in the opener, along with six cracking aces but his four double faults allowed Carreno-Busta to backfire at him in the fourth game with a break point conversion. The Spaniard registered his second serve break of the day in the eighth game to bring the scores on levelled terms at 4-4.
A regular game then took the opening set into a tie breaker round, which also went to the wire. Beck clinched a crucial mini-break in the last minutes of the tie breaker to bag the opening set at 7-6(6) to lead the contest 1-0.
Carreno-Busta lost his steam completely in the following set and dropped his serve early again to trail 0-3. His position exacerbated in the matchup when Beck stung another break point in the sixth game, which left him serving for the match at 5-1. The third seed served out of the game comprehensively at 6-1 to make it into the quarter-finals of the tournament to face the Special exempt from Finland, Henri Kontinen for a place in the semis. Kontinen defeated Roberto Bautista-Agut of Spain in the second round to feature the quarter-finals of Open Castilla y Leon.
