Karol Beck slashes past Amir Weintraub into quarterfinal – Salzburg Indoors 2011
Top seeded Slovak Karol Beck overpowers Israeli Amir Weintraub in straight sets at the Salzburg Indoors 2011, an ATP Challenger Tour event taking place at the indoor hard courts in Salzburg, Austria. He registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory
over the 25-year-old Israeli to advance into the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
The Zvolen born Beck took one hour and twenty-three minutes to triumph over the Israeli, ranked 194th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, on their first encounter. He not only inched towards his second
year-to-date challenger title (first one being at Segovia) but also booked a last eight spot.
A former top forty, Beck confidently entered Salzburg Arena and smoothly bagged entire serves after dusting away all three breakpoints came across. In addition to this, he cashed in the only breakpoint opportunity to his advantage
and clinched the opener with a 6-4 win. The Slovak clobbered a poor first serve share of 57 percent as opposed to Weintraub’s 73 percent but registered a plausible 58 percent win on it.
The highly positive Slovak stayed on course in the final set. He failed to fend off both breakpoints faced but capitalised on three out of four breakpoint opportunities to his advantage, sealing the victory by winning six games
to four again. Beck produced an acceptable first serve share of 63 percent in contrast with the Israeli’s 70 percent and registered an impressive 59 percent win on it.
Beck had an awesome season so far as he made final berths at Sarajevo and Eckental Challenger and clinched at Segovia after overwhelming French Gregoire Burquier in straight sets in the title round. In addition to this, he made
a last four appearance at Cherbourg Challenger and reached the third round of Wimbledon through qualifiers.
Next up for highest ranked player of the tournament is the winner of the match between a local wild card entrant Martin Fischer and a German qualifier Benjamin Becker.
Fourth seed Paolo Lorenzi faced a different fate as he exited from the second round by German Bjorn Phau. The Italian founded zero breakpoint opportunity and defended only half of the six breakpoints came across, eventually suffering
a 3-6, 2-6 defeat in one hour and seven minutes.
29-year-old Lorenzi formulated a better first serve share of 69 percent as compared to the German’s 62 percent and earned a convincing 58 percent win on it. He also committed less errors and double faults but his poor returns led
his downfall.
