Unseeded Karol Beck of Slovakia upset 26th seed, Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, ranked 41st in the world, in four sets 7-6(5), 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the second round of Wimbledon Championships at the All England
Club in London on Thursday. The Slovakian took three hours and three minutes to oust his opponent in a tough encounter.
Beck and Garcia-Lopez broke each other two times in the first set, levelling the score at 6-6 to take the set to a tie-break. The Slovakian bagged a single mini-break in the tie-break, sealing it 7-5. The right-handed was lucky
to win the set despite committing nineteen unforced errors in the first set. Beck converted both break points he received on Garcia-Lopez’ serve and saved one of the three break points on his own serve in the opening set.
With winning momentum on his side, Beck took an early lead in the second set as he broke the Spaniard in the opening game to take a 1-0 lead. However, Garcia-Lopez broke back immediately and squared off the score at 1-1. The Slovakian
broke again in the seventh game and capitalised on it to win the set 6-4. Beck won 73 percent of the first service points and 45 percent of the second service points in the second set.
Garcia Lopez came back in the third set, breaking his opponent in the sixth game and winning the set 6-3. The Spaniard smacked twelve winners and clinched 43 percent of the receiving points in the third set. The 28-year-old captured
eight of ten net approach points in the third set. Garcia-Lopez capitalised on one of the six break point opportunities he created on Beck’s serve and saved both break points he received on his own serve in the third set.
After losing a one-sided third set, Beck regained the lost momentum in the fourth set as he broke Garcia-Lopez in the fifth game and consolidated on it to win the set 6-4. The Slovakian delivered 67 percent of the first serves
and six aces in the fourth set. The 29-year-old smashed fourteen winners and sealed a whopping 88 percent of the first service points in the fourth set. The five feet and eleven inches tall availed the only break point opportunity he received on the Spaniard’s
serve in the fourth set.
Beck is drawn to face either seventh seed, Spaniard David Ferrer, ranked 6th in the world, or world number 122 Ryan Harrison of USA in the round of 32.
