Karol Beck wins the battle against Clement Reix in the second round – Challenger of Granby 2011 CH
Seeded at number four in the tournament, Karol Beck of Slovakia, wins the battle of nerves against the Frenchman, Clement Reix, in the second round of the National Bank’s Challenger of Granby on Thursday.
The exciting three-setter was played on the hard court of Granby, Canada, with the fourth seed Slovak coming out as the winner after one hour and forty six minutes of sweating play. Beck settled the final scores at 6-2, 2-6, 6-3,
to qualify for the quarter-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
A number of major momentum swings were witnessed in the competition but the fourth seed Slovakian overcame the pressure situations with great mastery and turned around the game in the third set to seal victory. It was an evenly
poised contest throughout until the third set when Reix finally crumbled to suffer a defeat.
Despite of 61 per cent serve, Beck quickly reeled off 11 out of 14 first serve points in the opener to get a blistering start to the match. The Slovak got hold of the opener when he stung his first serve break of the day in the
fourth game to lead 3-1 and then kept on playing his aggressive tennis to exert pressure upon the bewildered French. Reix had break points on two different occasions in the opening set but he frittered them away to remain on the back foot throughout the contest.
Beck’s second serve break in the seventh game proved vital in the first set, letting him serve foe the opener at 5-2. The fourth seed easily served out of the first set at 6-2 to get a one-set lead in the contest but a sudden downslide
in his game was observed in the very next set. Beck went through a devastating slump in the second set, coughing a number of unforced errors, which included four crucial double faults as well.
Reix bounced back very strongly in the match after striking two serve breaks and sealing the second set at 6-2 to bring the contest on even terms. However, Beck turned the tide in the final set and absolutely blew away the Frenchman
by securing 11 out of 13 first serve points and two more break points to conclude victory at 6-3.
Beck will play his quarter-final matchup against the eighth seed Canadian, Vasek Pospisil, who defeated his fellow compatriot, Steven Diez, in the second round to book a date with Beck in the quarters.
