Karrie Webb fails to defend title in Singapore, determined to atone for mistakes in upcoming events
Karrie Webb, who wanted to defend her title at the HSBC Women’s Champions this week, faced a string of disappointments when she saw a lesser-known player, Angela Stanford, walk away with the trophy and a whopping $210,000 prize.
Karrie, who is regarded as one of the great players of Australia, had vowed before setting foot on the course of Tanah Merah Country Club that she will try to do her best to defend the title.
Despite the strong field that featured big names like current world number one Yani Tseng and Suzann Pettersen, American Stanford grabbed much of the attention.
Webb must have been in shock when she recalled her performance in the same tournament last year.
She did what most of the players and analysts thought was an uphill task. Coming off well by making a number of impressive putts, Webb looked like she was unstoppable.
She gained a one-shot victory, beating her nearest rivals in an impressive style.  Her style of putting was appreciated by the spectators, as she came off well making sensible strokes.
The way she beat Chie Arimura, who was the leader in the first 3 rounds, amazed everyone.
Considered Australia’s most prominent golfer, Webb strikes fear into her rivals with her accurate swings.
Although hailing from Australia, she is mainly aligned with the US-based LPGA Tour, which highlights that she likes playing among a strong field.
She may be feeling down due to her unimpressive finish at the HSBC Women’s Champions, but she can look forward to other events slated to be played this season.
The most amazing aspect that makes Webb stand out among big names in women’s golf is winning 7 major titles. Overall, the Aussie star has racked up 38 triumphs on the LPGA Tour.
Despite heaps of victories, Webb has been somewhat inconsistent. For instance, she tends to lose confidence after losing an event.
She has shown in many events that she can carve out a victory under nerve-racking situations, but she quickly gets off the track to start losing events again.
She has been aware of her putting expertise, and makes the most of it.
After grabbing the title at HSBC Champions last season, she said, "I definitely take a lot of confidence from it. I putted the last couple really well, I've putted well pretty much the whole four weeks that I've played. I shrugged off the bogeys fairly quickly
as well".
Webb knows that she can add another victory to her impressive profile but what of the aims she had been making before coming to Singapore this month?
“I am really looking forward to coming back to Singapore and playing in the HSBC Women's Champions,” she said.
She added, “As a professional, you always want to test yourself against the best, and from past experience the tournament in Singapore attracts one of the best fields of the year outside of the Majors”.
Now, how bad Webb has been feeling after she failed to defend her title at Tanah Merah Country Club, she can eye Kia Classic slated to be played from March 22-25.
The month of March will offer another golden chance for Webb to prove her mettle. The major championship, Kraft Nabisco Championship, which is going to be staged from March 29 to April 1, will remind the 37-year-old Aussie of the impressive triumph she recorded
in 2000.
US Women’s Open, which is going to start from July 5-8, can also become one of Webb’s best tournaments.
Currently ranked 19th, the Aussie star will definitely find it hard to seize the top spots in the current season due to tough competition.
