Karrie Webb firm to defend title at Phoenix - RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup
Karrie Webb of Australia is determined to defend her title at the RR Donnelley LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Founders Cup, slated to start this week at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge’s Wildfire Golf Club.
Webb will be facing a strong field featuring leading players, such as the current world number one Yani Tseng.
However, the Aussie star appears to be in a comfortable position, as she is confident enough to repeat what she did last year, winning the title in an impressive style.
Experts have also said that Webb seems to be in a far better situation than most of the players in the field, as she knows what it takes to shine at Phoenix.
They said that the field is tougher than last year. With a number of rising players eyeing a good position on the leaderboard, Webb may find it hard to grab a victory with ease.
Last year, Webb grabbed the spotlight when she carved out a stunning victory at the Founders Cup. She outperformed Brittany Lincicome and Paula Creamer by recording a six-under 66.
It was Webb’s second consecutive triumph. Her stellar performance on the course led observers to make some good predictions for the upcoming events.
It remains to be seen how the 37-year-old is going to play among battle-hardened players like Tseng and Na Yeon Choi.
Speaking of her victory, Webb said that she is glad that she was able to win the inaugural tournament. She said that the field was tough last year but she came off well on most of the holes, thanks to her putting expertise.
She said that she plans to repeat what she did last year, but it is going to take plenty of hard work and persistence.
"It was such a great honour to win the inaugural Founders Cup," Webb said. "I'm looking forward to defending but also catching up with some of the many great women who have come before us".
The Founders Cup was introduced to pay tribute to the services of the patrons and founding fathers of the LPGA.
"I don't think we can celebrate our history enough and it's always great to have our founders come out to any event. We can never thank them and the women before us for the platform they have given us," Webb said.
