Karrie Webb keeps her hopes alive with focus on victories
Karrie Webb appears to be quite complacent with what she has been doing on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) since turning pro, but she is eager to add yet another victory to her profile this year.
The Aussie prodigy, who won the RR Donnelley LPGA Foundation Cup last year, has set her sights on the title, with a clear vision and plan.
Clearly Webb is after more a solid achievement than just money, and the Founders Cup is the best opportunity.
The Cup is scheduled to be staged at Wildfire Golf Club, Phoenix, Arizona from March 15-18, with several top-flight contenders firm to give their rivals a run for their money.
The roster at the $1,500,000 event is more solid than the last edition, as it is featuring tough contenders who are known to win in difficult situations.
There are many players in field who are likely to come out as tough contenders, but Webb has decided to do her best in order to defend her title.
The idea that Webb’s golf future might be under threat may seem unlikely but a number of rising players on the LPGA have already started troubling her.
Keeping in view Webb’s spectacular performance in almost every event that she participated in, observers say the Aussie star is still a threat to many players — if not the ones at the top spot.
Webb currently ranks 19th and has what it takes to pose a threat to her adversaries in Phoenix. There are plausible reasons to single out the Aussie as a strong contender.
The 19th position may not be intimidating to many on the top spots, but Webb is resilient and has shown it on several occasions.
Her respect is still intact after her last victory at the Founders Cup, and this is what is keeping her going.
She recently spoke to the media and shared her feelings regarding the upcoming events. She looked pretty calm and composed, exuding a mixture of confidence and humility.
She said that she knows she is grown enough and there are plenty of younger players on the course. She expressed confidence in her game, saying she still has what it takes to surprise fans.
"I'll know when the day comes that I'm done. It will be when I don't want to put in the hard work. It's not the part of the game I like,” Webb said.
She continued, “I love competing and winning tournaments, and I need to put in the hard work to do that, and I committed to the swing changes and started working hard”.
Although the shining profile of Webb reflects her resilience, it does not make sense to ignore other competent players who have literally sidelined the Aussie in recent years.
However, she could not help expressing her desire to do best on the course. She said still desires to record wins.
To many, money is the most important factor that motivates players, but Webb’s aims show that she is more of title lover than a hefty purse.
"The one thing I know now is that I really didn't appreciate when I was winning six or seven times a year, because I thought that was what I was supposed to do. Win and move on to the next week," she said.
Webb has certainly changed in the last 15 years, as she is more focused on winning than just making a name for herself.
