Karrie Webb prepares for the second major of the 2012 season
Aussie Karrie Webb is determined to record her third victory at the second major event of the season — US Women’s Open, scheduled to be held from July 5-8, at the Blackwolf Run Golf Course, Kohler.
Given her latest performance in the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) events, Webb appears to have ended her out-of-form era.
She participated in the first major tournament of the 2012 season and displayed a stunning performance, finishing tied for the 15th.
The US Women’s Open is very important for the 37-year-old Aussie, as she won two consecutive editions in 2000 and 2001.
The field of the major event will be quite formidable, given the presence of tough contenders such as the current world number one Yani Tseng and the defending champion So Yeon Ryu of South Korea.
Analysts said that veteran Aussie has had a fair share of her success in the sport of golf and now she is struggling to repeat what she displayed 10 years back.
They said that the Aussie star has grown old enough to beat battle-hardened competitors like the top-ranked Tseng and Paula Creamer.
Although not as good as back in 2001, Webb still has what it takes to give a tough time to rivals. She proved her mettle yet again last season, as she recorded triumphs at the HSBC Women’s Champions and RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup.
Webb has been winless in the current season, which led her fans and observers to predict that it will be almost impossible for the once-successful player to win a major event.
Although the roster of the US Women’s Open will be tougher than expectations, the player who can pose the biggest threat to Webb is Yani Tseng. Tseng has been superb right from the start of the current season.
The Taiwanese star has racked up three triumphs so far in the current season. Observers said that Tseng will be putting her best foot forward to atone for Kraft Nabisco lapses.
When Webb won the first US Open back in 2000, she had made big plans for the future. “I've got far, far more golf to play. The fact that I've achieved this so soon is just a bonus, I guess. Everything from now on is a bonus for me," the proud Aussie had
shared.
It remains to be seen whether the two-time US Open winner can cheer up her fans once again at the prestigious tournament.
