Karrie Webb ties for fifth position at Hoylake
Australian Karrie Webb could have clinched her 8th major title at the Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012, but a woeful 82 in the final round hampered her from rising to the top of leaderboard.
Webb kicked off the major battle at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, United Kingdom, in impressive style, as she looked eager to add yet another major success to her already-solid profile.
Since the unfavourable weather conditions hurt the tournament’s schedule, the final two rounds were played on Sunday, making it a little hectic for the contenders.
When Webb set foot on the course on Sunday morning, she was brimming with confidence as she sought to continue the pursuit of the major title by remaining in contention. An almost impeccable 68 in the third
round gave the Aussie golfer much-needed confidence and she managed to cement her position on the leaderboard.
With a bogey and five birdies, Webb surged most of her nearest rivals at the end of the third round. Although the round saw the LPGA titan make several superb strokes, three consecutive birdies on the 11th,
12th and 13th hole played a pivotal part in putting her in a comfortable position on the leaderboard.
“I'm happy to be at 3-under and I'm surprised to be six shots behind being at 3-under. But you know, I'm happy with the way I played and handled the golf course,” Webb said while talking to the media at the
end of the second round.
Although the winds wreaked havoc throughout the tournament, the second round remained calm after the rough weather eased off a little.
“You know, it wasn't, when there was no wind today, I wasn't swinging as well as I would have liked. When the conditions were tougher, it made me fight a little bit and get more creative and hit more golf
shots rather than technically trying to play my way around the course,” the Aussie star added.
South Korean Jiyai Shin stole the show once again as she grabbed a huge nine-shot victory after posting an overall 279 on the leaderboard.
Webb praised Shin for her stunning performance in the second round, saying it was difficult posting such a solid score. “Obviously she (Shin) got off to a flyer which really set the tone to her round”.
