Kas/Peya overwhelm Gonzalez/Lipsky in the opening round of doubles – Swiss Indoors Basel 2011
Third seed in the tournament, the combination of Germany’s Christopher Kas and Alexander Peya of Austria registered a convincing victory over the Mexican-American duo of Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky in the opening round of
the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel on Wednesday evening.
Rated at number 13 in the world doubles rankings, the winning pair took merely one hour and six minutes of play to wrap up victory in straight sets, 7-6(0), 6-2, making a berth in the quarter-final rounds of the ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 event.
The contest was played on the indoor hard courts of the St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, with Kas and Peya putting up a magnificent show of dominance over their opponents. The contest remained evenly poised in the opener
but the second set complete belonged to Kas and Peya, who absolutely outplayed their opponents to claim a comprehensive victory.
Gonzalez and Lipsky were off to a good start in the opening set and equally matched their opponents to keep the score board ticking on even terms. They clinched 23 out of 33 first serve points in the matchup, whereas their opponent
bettered them with 36 out of 40 first serve points to come out as the winner. Kas and Peya converted three of their five break chances to register their 23rd victory as a duo in the current season. Gonzalez and Lipsky have already bagged an ATP
doubles title this year but failed to resist the fury of their third seeded opponents in Wednesday’s competition.
An early trade of serve breaks was seen in the opener, followed by a regular game which took the scores to 6-6, enforcing a tie breaker round into play. Gonzalez and Lipsky totally ran out of steam and utterly failed to clinch
a single point in the decider. Kas and Peya rocketed away to 7-6(0), reeling seven point in a row to close out the first set. The third seeded competitors took complete control of the second set with two early break point conversions and cruised to victory
at 6-2 in a comprehensive manner.
Kas and Peya will meet the unseeded duo of Ivan Dodig from Croatia and Viktor Troicki of Serbia in the quarter-final draw to battle it out for a place in the semis of the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel. Dodig and Troicki were successful
against the unseeded pair of Thomaz Bellucci and Santiago Giraldo in the opening round of the tournament.
