My free trial version of Norton Anti-virus is running out this month and I'm considering getting a new AV program. I am running on Windows Vista Home Premium.

I have come down to two choices - Kaspersky and Nod32.

Which of the two should i get? (I do not care about how long the scans take). My primary concern is performance.

  1. ESET NOD32 Antivirus!! http://www.nod32.com.sg

    Why must choose NOD32 Antivirus?

    Best Detection:

ESET is the leader in proactive, precise threat protection with more Advanced+ awards for superior threat detection than any other vendor since May 2005. (source AV-Comparatives.org)

Threat Sense™ technology detects more than 75% of new, unknown, threats heuristically - even before a signature update is available (Source AV-Test.org)

ESET Threat Sense is the only antivirus technology that has not missed a single In-the-Wild virus in rigorous Virus Bulletin VB100 testing since May 1998. (Source virusbtn.com)

    Low False Positive Rate:

A very low false positive rate ensures that the “good” files on your computer will not be flagged as malware. This is due to the intelligent synergistic use of advanced heuristics and generic signatures. ESET Threat Sense has produced the fewest false positives in its long history of testing with Virus Bulletin.

    Fastest Performance:

42 MB/sec average scanning rate on Windows XP SP2 (source: Virus Bulletin).

Up to 34 times faster than the leading brands under Windows XP

    Minimal Resource Utilization:

Optimized engine uses approximately 38 MB memory on average.

Uses less than 40M of disk space.

  2. The  truth is they are both very good choices so it don't matter which you choose.

  3. Kaspersky would be better. Nod32 is lighter on resources while Kaspersky is kinda slow on startup. Overall, Nod32 is a decent antivirus that consumes less resources while Kaspersky is more tight on security but hogs more resources .

  4. NOD 32

  5. Nod32 perform better, it is eating less memory in your PC; however, I suggest you take a closer look at Kaspersky Anti-virus. They release updates, patches quicker than any other anti virus software. In addition, Kaspersky detects more viruses. 2 years ago I had to make decision for the company I work for, and I had to pick Norton or Kaspersky. I invested a lot of time and effort to do the research and I end up using Kaspersky.

  6. I switched to Kaspersky from Nod32 at the office about five weeks ago at the suggestion of my IT contractor. He was concerned that Nod32 had missed some things (I don't really know what that means), and our license was about to expire anyway.

My experience with Kaspersky is that it feels like running underwater. Internet is a lot slower, longer time to load pages and while the pages are loading, you can't access anything (other tabbed pages). I turn it off every now and then at certain times of the day. I kept Nod32 on my personal laptop.

If you are really worried about intrusions/infections, Kaspersky is going to be more robust. It is just going to make things go slower for you. If you are a normal user, and speed is more important, go with Nod 32.
