I wonder if maybe the Tanto, Wakazashi, whatever, is underrated.

  1. katana, wakizashi, tanto is the main swords carried by Samurai. They are classified as the three according to their length.

katana usually about 42 inch long.

Wakizashi about 12 to 24 inches long.

    Tanto  about 6-12 inches long

  2. The wakazashi and Tanto are very important. It may seem that they are not as important. That is only because more people are interested in learning the sword, which is primarily the katana or long sword. The wakazashi was a back up sword in case the main sword was not available. It was also used to cut off the head of the opponent if the head was to be taken back to prove the kill was made.  The tanto is not taught much anymore. In Japan it is rarely ever seen practiced. When ti is it is done out of the public's sight. This is largely due to the fact that the Yakusza still practice and use the tanto.

    Hope this helps!

  3. The simple wooden boken. The great Japanese swordsman killed many opponents with this tool.  Before he became a noted warrior all he could legally carry was a boken.

  4. In the Edo period, a samurai carried both a katana and a wakazashi. Miyamoto Musashi used one in each hand in his Niten style of kenjutsu. He was invincible in his day. His greatest rival was Sasaki, and they agreed to fight a duel on an island. On the boat ride there, Musashi carved an oar into a bokken and killed Sasaki with his first blow. Strong men might use a daikatana that is longer and heavier than the usual 42" one.

  5. yeah the short sword..other than that..I don't think the j*p use other swords..only the samurai could have swords..they were out lawed..
