Kate Godfrey claims Women’s 200m IM gold – 2013 NZ Open Championships
Kate Godfrey of Neptune Swimming Club claimed gold medal of the Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on opening day of the 2013 NZ Open Championships in Westwave Aquatic Centre, Auckland, on Sunday, March 17.
The 19-year-old Godfrey faced tough contest from her closest competitor throughout the race but with her astonishing pace in the second half, she dominated her way to the playoff for gold medal.
With her astounding pace, Godfrey enjoyed a lead of one stroke over her following swimmer and cruised her way towards the finishing end for gold medal with an effort of 2 minutes and 17.87 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Natasha Lloyd of North Canterbury Swim Club, who was 0.22 seconds behind and finished second in the race with an effort of 2 minutes and 18.09 seconds.
The second best finisher was chased by Emily McGill of Capital Swim Club, who stayed 0.40 seconds away from her former finisher and surfaced on the finishing end for bronze medal with an effort of 2 minutes and 18.49 seconds.
Fourth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Helena Gasson of Thames Swimming Club, who stayed three and a half body lengths behind and settled on the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 22.82 seconds.
Fifth position of the race was obtained by Caitlin Rennell of Jasi, who was nearly 0.80 seconds behind and posted a time of 2 minutes and 23.41 seconds.
Sixth position of the race was obtained by Katie Kenneally of Neptune Swimming Club, who was 0.33 seconds away from her preceding swimmer and hit the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 23.74 seconds.
Kenneally was followed by Kelly Scammell of AquaGym, who was half a body length behind and tapped the finishing end with an effort of 2 minutes and 24.30 seconds.
Eighth position of the race was secured by Kendall Reidy of Central Hawkes Bay, who concluded her race in a time of 2 minutes and 24.85 seconds.
In addition, Godfrey received a huge round of applause from the audience for her notable efforts after the session.
