Kate Hofmeyer pockets Girls 5km gold: Day three – 2012 Australian Open Water Championships
Burnside’s Kate Hofmeyer spoiled the party of her challengers by pocketing gold medal of the 5km race in Girls 16 Year Olds category on final day of the 2012 Australian Open Water Championships on Sunday, February 19.
The 16-year-old Hofmeyer, who finished second in the 10km discipline on day two of the championship, impressed the audience by acquiring gold medal of the 5km discipline.
Hofmeyer had an absolutely trouble free win in the event as she remained prominently ahead of her fellow competitors throughout the race. With her flawless efforts and powerful stroke, she dictated terms to her competitors in the 5km swim.
She remained in a lead of almost 50 metres over her closest competitor, Briella Brown of Carile and reached the medal rostrum for gold medal with a timing of 1 hour, 04 minutes and 15.75 seconds.
Subsequently, Brown was almost thirty-four seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and followed her on the podium for silver medal by posting a nice time of 1 hour, 04 minutes and 49.36 seconds.
The second position holder remained in a lead of just two seconds over her following swimmer, Sarah Johnstone, who earned third finest spot of the swim by submitting an effort of 1 hour, 04 minutes and 51.78 seconds.
After a while, the spectators experienced relentless efforts of Surrey Park’s Bethany Robertson, who captured gold medal of the 5km discipline in Girls 17-18 Year Olds age group.
The 17-year-old Robertson cemented her place on the victory stand for the crown of the event by reporting an effort of 1 hour, 04 minutes and 44.26 seconds. She was chased by Jessica Lauricella of SLC Aquadot, who remained almost one second slower and submitted
an effort of 1 hour, 04 minutes and 45.75 seconds for silver medal.
Natalie James of Grace emerged as the third fastest finisher of the event as she produced a timing of 1 hour, 04 minutes and 48.49 seconds.
In addition, Hofmeyer was satisfied with her first gold finish in the tournament and articulated her desire of representing her nation at the elite levels of international swimming.
